| There are three main kinds of laptop batteries - Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (LiON). They vary in cost, weight and specific characteristics.
All modern laptops have lightweight LiON or lithium polymer batteries which are usually pre-installed in laptops. These batteries are powerful enough to run laptops as well as accessories, such as mp3 players, DVD players and USB devices.
They are not that heavyweight as NiCd and NiMH batteries and have not got any memory defect.
If exploited properly, LiON batteries are expected to run for almost three years, but it is essential to clear out that the three-year period of time starts when batteries are made and not when you start to exploit them. A laptop battery needs changing when the laptop cannot function anymore unless attached to the main supply via an adapter. Below are several guidelines to prolong laptop battery's life.
• Avoid frequent complete discharges, as this puts added strain on a laptop battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are preferable for lithium-ion batteries than a full discharge. Recharging partially charged LiON batteries is secure, as there is no memory. Short pc battery's life in a laptop usually hangs upon the high temperatures rather than charge - discharge patterns.
• It is recommended to discharge a battery to the fullest after 30 charges. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less precise and in some cases will cut off the laptop prematurely.
• Keep a LiON battery cool.
• Consider removing a battery from a laptop when it is run on a fixed power. (Some laptop producers are worried about dust and moisture that accumulate inside the battery casing.)
• Avoid buying spare lithium-ion batteries for later deployment. Pay attention to dates of manufacture. Do not buy old stock, even if it is available at lower prices.
• If you have got a spare LiON laptop battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other one cool by putting it into the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For prolonged storage, keep the laptop battery at a 40% charge level.
